modern day slaves: clockwatchers

it's been a long time since i did a modern day slaves comic strip. i did this rather quickly (over a few nights) to keep myself sane after some long overtime hours at my present job. it's somewhat "based on true events" in dealing with my old boss from my last job and the overtime hours i clocked in with those slave drivers.

this strip is vastly different stylistically from my last MDS strip for various reasons. i'm more interested in prose writing lately and would like to explore that further. ideally, i'd like to incorporate prose and character dialog with cartoon illustrations in more of a splash page/single panel format, similar to what i've done above. i am still a great fan of sequential comic art but trying to produce more traditional strips as intricately detailed as my previous 3 page MDS story no longer interests me as much as it used to. let's see if i can keep up with this format.

hopefully the layout of this dialog doesn't confuse you and is clear as to who is saying what and in what order.

jonathan ames: portrait of a mildly perverted writer (boxer):
it's been a while since i've drawn anyone in a "realistic" manner so i just wanted to keep things loose and rough around the edges. the above pic was inspired by the writings and cover photo of ames' latest book of essays, the double life is twice as good. like all his other books, it's a damn good read and an excellent jumping on point if you have not read any of his previous work.

the king of comedy mock movie poster:
submitted a b&w version of this to artjumble awhile back. posted above are my newer color versions. the subject was "favorite movie of all time". taxi driver is actually my fave movie of all time but the king of comedy is definitely my favorite comedy from director martin scorsese.

the fantastic faux

i kept putting this off because i was really happy with the initial pencil stages (which you can see HERE) and i wanted to finish this up old school, windsor-newton brush/pelican ink style. but inking with a brush can be a laboriously time consuming task and could easily take the fun out of an otherwise fun project if one is not patient. unfortunately, my demanding full time job does not allow me the time, energy, or luxury to meticulously ink a page of cartoons the way i used to during my old college days.

so, many overtime hours later, out of an overwhelming need to draw something non work related, i just broke out this old page of pencils and inked it up with some micron and sharpie pens. i scanned it in and colored it up in illustrator rather quickly as well.

i do realize some of today's best working pro comic book artists ink their work in microns, sharpies and brush pens. most get beautiful lines out of them. much better lines than i ever could. but honestly, i'm just a sentimental fool who sometimes misses getting pelican ink stains all over his fingers.

many, many, many years ago, back when i was a twenty something year old recent art school graduate, i foolishly believed i would become a famously beloved comic book artist. that didn't happen....

there are times when i feel as if the day to day grind of the "9 to 5" work week is just too soul sucking to put up with. dealing with the arrogant clients and the ridiculously impossible deadlines they impose upon you simply because they believe your sole purpose in life is to bend to their every whim until you fucking break on a daily basis is an oppressive feeling and quite depressing.

so how does one deal with these feelings? one could go on a murderous bat shit insane inter office rampage followed by the inevitable "suicide by cop" shoot out OR...

any graphic artist working a corporate, full time gig (or worse yet is married to someone who is) knows the horrors of which i speak. kim mcgrattan, the writer/director whose name graces this b-movie schlock poster, is my lovely (and extremely patient and understanding) wife's name.

i thought about making the silhouette a screaming human but i like the idea of a giant monster being chained to a small desktop computer. like the poster says...

last week's artjumble topic was alan moore's watchmen. i really wanted to submit something that week so i worked up a quick pen sketch (top left corner) which eventually evolved into a quick comic strip. the entire thing (from idea to rough to pencils to ink and finally to color) took me a few hours. kind of an exercise for myself to see if i could pull off a fully realized strip in a short amount of time.

the character above is rorschach who was brilliantly portrayed by jackie earl haley in the watchmen movie. in my opinion, his portrayal of this complex character is as good as heath ledger's joker in the dark knight! i did have a bit of a problem with the director's decision to alter the ending slightly as i thought it was an unnecessary change that really didn't make much sense but overall, i liked the film and thought it did the book justice.

occasionally i take a break from drawing and try to dabble with type and design. although these are already a few months old, it's my most recent piece of personal artwork and the only thing i've done lately that i feel like is worth posting. been feeling too tired and uninspired to draw lately. the quote is from comedian drew carey. i did these at work.*

just a few rough sketches along with some finished art:

harrison mumford
on page 4 of my P.S. 666 story there's a 3/4 splash page where most of my characters get into a big school rumble in the hallway. this little drawing i did of harrison mumford fighting is one of favorite things about this story. in the scene he's fighting with muddy lagoon who's attacking him with a trident.

vamp racer
this vampy racer appears on page 2 of my P.S. 666 story. in the scene she's happily speeding away after dropping her son off at school whom she leaves coughing in a cloud of exhaust.

krackers the killer klown
one of the first characters i had created for use in my P.S. 666 story. but as the creative juices started flowing and i came up with more characters this poor bastard just got pushed off to the side. i wanted to use him in the class picture panel on page 1 but he didn't fit. so i used him elsewhere within my story as an "extra". i debated putting krackers initials on his forehead (KKK) but went with the pentagram instead.

the clockwork kid
another character i created that never got used or even got passed the rough pencil stage. an obvious take on malcolm mcdowell's character in the stanley kubrick classic a clockwork orange.

just playing around with some color options. (the original version is is full color.)
first i desaturated the color page which turned it into gray tones. the one on the left i gave a -100 cyan color balance. the one on the right i gave a -100 yellow color balance. i like the monochrome versions as it sort of gives the pages an old timey "black and white" movie feel.

i've got a whole lotta nothing new to throw up here so i just figured i'd throw up something OLD... again! i'm still currently working on and putting the finishing touches on my P.S. 666 story so i probably won't have any new shit up here for awhile so get used to it! i still really like this nasty old piece so here's hoping you do to!

it's from my Joe Kubert School daze so i'm guesstimating it was done maybe around 1994! going to the Kubert school it was hard not to be at least a little bit influenced by Joe's style and the many European artists who drew and inked in this style. one of my favorite artist's who inks with a heavy flowing brush stroke is Jordi Bernet. you can currently see his beautiful work in DC's Jonah Hex #37. but if you're like me and not the biggest fan of westerns and want to see some of his stuff i would highly recommend reading Torpedo 1936. it's a great old school, pulp/noir/gangster series. the collected volumes might be hard to find but they are well worth the search.

early pencils for an upcoming project...

i wanted to do something along the lines of my lil' bastards comic strips. it's a style and humor that i enjoy working in and i believed i could create a multi page story in this style within the allotted deadline time. but how to elaborate a one panel comic strip into a story? i struggled with this for awhile as i didn't think a story about a group of kids being sadistically violent for no reason would work. the whole point of those lil' bastards strips is that the violence in them is meant to be a shocking (and hopefully humorous!) "one time only" moment for the kids involved. so then i came up with the idea of making the kids involved lil' monsters as being monsters sort of gives them a reason to be violent or at least more of an expected reason to be.

now how would i draw each monster?

this also took some time to develop. why are monsters, especially the classic monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein, so endearingly popular? it's because they are outcasts and misfits and everyone in some point in their lives could relate to that feeling of being an outcast. so i developed my depictions of the monsters as such. i made them nerds, freaks and geeks! the scenario of putting these monster nerds in a school specifically made for them developed after that and soon P.S. 666 and it's first class was founded. i tried to give each monster there own personality through their individual appearance and from there the gags in the story were now almost writing themselves!

the dark mite: finalit's the dark mite and his big ass big wheel bat pod! i like the poster design approach i ended up going with as opposed to doing a more scenic background.

i realize the full color version might be a little too dark to appreciate so i'm throwing up the "inked" black line version as well. "inked" is in quotes because i tweeked A LOT of this in illustrator seeing as how i originally inked this with an old blunt sharpie through cheap ass tracing paper! the original black line looked like crap after scanning.

as usual i like the roughness and energy of the rough pencils more than the final full color. only while doing the final version did i realize how much of an engineering disaster my bat pod was! how the hell is lil' bats supposed to steer this fucking monstrosity! i still think it looks pretty bad ass though.

the spirit (full color):who will save Will Eisner's The Spirit from Frank Miller's The Spirit???

in contrast to my little cartoon above i'm actually trying to reserve judgment on this film until i see it for myself. i'm just kinda glad the movie poster no longer sports will eisner's name on it as this is in no way will eisner's the spirit as much as it is just frank miller's creation...or abomination(!!!) depending on your point of view. but grumpy ol' frank's just like any other movie director in the business because at the end of the day he's gonna shoot whatever the fuck he wants! for better or for worse! let's just hope it's for the better...

although all those ridiculous sam jackson costume changes doesn't leave one with much hope! in the short trailer i saw, sam's dressed up as a black nazi, a gay samurai and some kind of russian pimp! i've seen less costume changes at a cher concert!

um...not that i've ever been to a cher concert or anything...

i know the art posts have been lacking over here lately at Beer and Cookies but i've FINALLY got something NEW for you. i think it's pretty representative of how fucking hot it's been in nyc this summer! this humid ass weather makes sitting down at the drawing table pretty damn miserable...but that's exactly what i've been doing! the new art posts have been lacking cuz i've been busy working on a personal art project and right now it's my main priority. i'll fill you all in on the details later. until then....STAY COOL!

this blog has been helpful in not only getting my lazy ass to do some more drawing outside of work but it's also been helping me get back in contact with some old college buddies of mine! i recently got contacted by another fellow joe kubert alum, (yeah that's right! my dumb ass went to the joe kubert school!) derrick williams, whose website kuzuplanet.com you can check out right here. derrick's a cool guy who opened my eyes to the wonders of hallucinogenic drugs, the groovy tunes of donovan and the juggtacular films of russ meyer! he'll be at heroes con this weekend in north carolina so if you're attending try and keep an eye out for his stuff.

i'm posting an ancient piece i did from those old joe kubert days featuring some of derrick's original comic book characters from a strip he created in school called, if memory serves me correctly, the LSvoiD. you can tell how old it is and see some of my musical influences by checking out some of those old concert posters in the background.

UPDATE: another old pic i did awhile back in school that derrick sent me incorporating his LSvoiD characters and my old comic strip character captain sunshine! (he's the lil' orb-y guy with the shades in the palm of the jack character.) captain sunshine was sort of "the ultimate optimist" in that he would see an extremely bad situation and humorously see the lighter side of it.

willie colon is the original puerto rican (or nuyorican if you prefer) baaaad aaassss! he's also one of my pop's favorite salsa musician's. back in the day, being an imaginative (and nosy!) young kid, i was always intrigued by my father's record collection, specifically willie colon's album cover art. in a single shot, willie's album covers depicted these gloriously violent, pulp fiction type, gangster stories full of bravado, machismo and overall badassery! take for example the first two album covers posted below:

the first album posted is willie colon's crime pays. as a kid, i loved that album cover. as an adult, i still LOVE that album cover! it just oozes gangsta cool! and that second album cover...well, that one just scared the shit outta me as a kid! the third "wanted poster" album cover is what inspired my latest piece for the vs. project. the theme was "concert t-shirt".

so did you read that linked article?? well, here's the gist of it...

an overseas publishing company has outright stolen an artist's artwork and has published it in a book without the artist's permission and without compensation! the publisher even stole and reprinted verbatim interviews the artist had conducted with other legitimate art publications! this publishing company lifted all the artwork and interviews from the artist's website and the book is selling at bookstores for around $100.00!

as much as i enjoy blogging i was at first hesitant to post my artwork online for this very reason. my eternally pessimistic mind just lives under the assumption that my artwork is being stolen and used and that i'm being ripped off somehow. (or is it my eternally egocentric mind telling me my art is good enough to steal in the first place?) anywho, the article inspired me and pissed me off enough do this poster triptych.

rough pencils:
so it's been a little over a month since my last post and to be honest with you i haven't picked up a pencil since then. at least not for my own drawing pleasure anyway. work's been pretty busy and i've been doing some OT. i'm trying to be more financially conscious and get my money right and i'm also trying to hit the gym more. although a little old, this pic was the last thing i worked on just for fun. it's based on a story i read in The Daily Mail, London's equivalent of the NY Post.

the story's about an adult male who convinced an underage female to sleep with him by telling her that he was a genuine vampire! when the cops went to arrest the nut he told the cops to "stay back!" because he was indeed a dangerous vampire and not to be messed with! to prove it, he showed off his canine teeth to the cops. the cops of course replied "everyone has canine teeth!" so the alleged vampire then threatened them with the fact that if they didn't leave him alone he would sic his pet dragon on them! the vampire claims that he and the underage girl were a couple and the sex was consensual.

the pic above is what i think the vampire looked like. personally, i like the rough pencils better.

it's been a little while since i posted some art and my feeble little OCD warped brain won't let me rest until i do! i did these mini marvel rough sketches around the time the fantastic four: rise of the steaming pile of crap movie came out. i just did the clean up pencils on the FF4 and friends recently and hopefully i'll get around to the inks and colors soon.
and in case you're wondering...yes, that is johnny storm shooting a flaming fart! if this gag has been done already in an FF4 comic or movie somebody please let me know so i could go back to thinking of myself as an unoriginal hack! and tha mighty tho' came to be because little kids with GINORMOUS afros are more fun to draw than muscley, nordic dudes with long, blond, fabio-locks!
